DIPPING SEASONINGS FOR BREAD: QUICK AND EASY APPETIZERS

With rising health concerns about being in crowds and many people deciding to spend more time at home, entertaining a few friends at your house can ease those feelings of social isolation. You don’t have to be a superb chef or even prepare a full meal, sometimes just appetizers and drinks will do the trick. Besides the usual selection of cheeses and charcuterie, we at Spice For Life have found serving bread hot out of the oven with a variety of unique dipping seasonings often becomes the big hit of the night. We have three bread dipping seasonings we recommend to our customers: Tuscan Bread Dipping Seasoning, Za’atar, and Everything Bagel.

Tuscan Bread Dipping Seasoning: This is one of our most popular spice blends. It has a light Italian flavor of Mediterranean oregano, parsley, basil, and rosemary combined with black pepper, salt, garlic, onion and a dash of red pepper flakes. Combined with extra virgin olive oil, you will think you are sitting at the table of your favorite Italian restaurant. For the best results, combine 3 Tablespoons of the Tuscan Bread Dipping Seasoning with ½ cup of EVOO and let it meld together for 20 minutes before serving with your selection of warm artisan bread. The seasoning with olive oil and balsamic vinegar can also be used for a light Italian salad dressing, and the blend is also good on roasted vegetables, potatoes, chicken and in a pasta sauce.

Za’atar: This spice blend (not to be confused with the wild herb of the same name) adds an exotic Middle Eastern flavor to your dinner table, and it is becoming more and more popular. Our Za’atar is an aromatic tart spice blend of sesame seeds, sumac, coriander, thyme, cumin, and black pepper. The sumac adds a little tart lemon-like flavor that is balanced with the herbs and nutty-like taste of the sesame seeds. There are many different recipes for Za’atar from countries all over the Middle East. We suggest using 2 Tablespoons of Za’atar mixed with ¼ cup of extra virgin olive oil. Then dip your warm pieta bread into the mixture and enjoy the unique flavor. Za’atar also happens to be salt free. In addition, Za’atar is good mixed into hummus or baba ganoush or as a rub on lamb and chicken or sprinkled over roasted or grilled vegetables.

Everything Bagel: Who hasn’t enjoyed a warm everything (sometimes called a mishmash) bagel straight from their favorite deli or bagel shop? So, imagine those spices without the bagel and you have our everything bagel blend, but with a much better balance of the spices. Sometimes Everything Bagel blends are just too salty. Our blend is made of a combination of poppy seeds, black sesame seeds, toasted white sesame seeds, minced roasted garlic, minced onion, and kosher salt. Of course, the best thing to mix an Everything Bagel seasoning with is cream cheese. Take a small package of your favorite type of cream cheese and let it sit on the counter for 30 minutes to soften. Then add in 3 Tablespoons of our Everything Bagel Seasoning. You can mix it by hand or in a food processor for a smoother consistency. Once blended well together, serve with bagel chips or pieta chips for dipping. Everything bagel seasoning is also delicious on eggs, avocado toast, grilled or roasted vegetables, and chicken.
